What the TakeCharge program is
The TakeCharge oil-to-electric program is a Newfoundland Power initiative that rewards homeowners for permanently switching their primary heating system from oil to a heat pump. Eligible homeowners can receive up to $22,000 in rebates depending on their home, system, and the configuration installed.
Who qualifies
You generally qualify if:
- Your home currently uses oil as the primary heating source.
- The new heat pump system meets program efficiency requirements.
- The old oil tank is removed and the home is taken off oil heat.
- You work with an approved contractor who can file the rebate paperwork.
We're a TakeCharge-approved contractor and we file the paperwork as part of every oil-to-heat-pump conversion we do.
How the rebate actually flows
- Pre-install application. We file the TakeCharge application before any work starts.
- Install. We install the heat pump (central ducted or mini-split), do any required electrical work, and remove the old oil tank.
- Inspection. Code 1 electrical inspection is booked and passed.
- Post-install paperwork. We submit the closeout documents to TakeCharge.
- Payment. TakeCharge processes the rebate. Timing varies — we'll set realistic expectations during the estimate.
What it doesn't cover
The rebate is for the heat pump conversion specifically. It doesn't cover unrelated work like cosmetic renovations, structural changes, or general electrical work that isn't part of the conversion.
